Former White House icon Donald Trump recently hinted that he might support the decriminalization of cannabis. His stance marks a significant departure from his previous, often rigid political positions on drugs.
An unexpected change of perspective
At a press conference held at Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump surprised many by expressing a growing openness towards the legalization of recreational marijuana. “As we legalize cannabis, I'm starting to agree more and more, because you know, it's legalized all over the country,” he said. He also pointed out the inconsistency of incarcerating individuals for cannabis-related offenses as the substance gradually becomes legal.
The reasons behind this reversal
Trump's evolving position reflects a recognition of the legislative changes in cannabis in the US as Biden and his administration reclassified cannabis as a less dangerous drug. Many states have already taken steps to legalize or decriminalize the substance. This widespread trend seems to have influenced the former president, who once took a resolutely tough stance against drug trafficking.
The specific importance of Florida
Trump mentioned that he would soon make a statement regarding legalization proposals in Florida. On November 3, Florida voters will decide on Amendment 3, which aims to legalize the possession and purchase of up to three ounces of cannabis for adults, as well as five grams of cannabis concentrates. Despite opposition from Governor Ron DeSantis, polls suggest that the proposal could win the 60% support needed for passage.
Differences within the Republican Party
Trump's possible move towards a softer approach contrasts with the firmness displayed by some other prominent members of the Republican Party, such as Ron DeSantis. The latter criticized the proposal because of the high concentration of THC in modern cannabis and its potential consequences for public health.
DeSantis denounced Amendment 3 at a breakfast meeting at the GOP convention, claiming that it granted “an unlimited constitutional right to possess and smoke”. His concerns centered on the potential health hazards of increased consumption of high-dose cannabis.
Trump's strategic role
This new stance could also serve Trump's strategic ambitions, as he considers his bid for the next presidential elections. By adopting a more progressive stance on cannabis, Trump could appeal to a part of the still undecided Republican electorate, without completely alienating his conservative base.
