CBD oils and tinctures are similar, but despite evidence to the contrary, they are not the same products. From extraction methods to composition, here are the qualities that make them different.

What is a CBD Tincture?

In the CBD industry, tinctures and oils are used (incorrectly) almost as synonyms. Since they are both made from the cannabis plant and provide the same benefits, it is easy to mistake them for each other.

But CBD tinctures differ from CBD oils because they use an alcohol base while the latter gets infused into a neutral carrier oil. Tinctures are also extracted from cannabis using a different method than CBD oil.

CBD tinctures get made via the Ethanol Extraction method that uses ethanol as a base fluid.

CBD Tincture or CBD Oil: What Are the Differences?

CBD oil and tinctures can potentially treat ailments like anxiety, chronic pain, fatigue, sleep disorders, and more. CBD tinctures are almost identical to CBD oil in terms of their uses. Even the side effects they produce are similar.

Due to their similarity, many suppliers pass off CBD oil as CBD tinctures and vice versa. While they undeniably share similar traits, you should know what makes them distinct.

Knowing the distinctions between CBD oils and tinctures will improve your CBD experience as they can help you choose a more suitable product.

From the method of production to the consumption, here are what makes CBD tinctures different from CBD oils.

1. Differences in Consumption

Since they both usually come in droppers, the consumption method for tinctures and oils are very similar. You can use the sublingual intake method when using them both.

To use CBD oil or CBD tinctures, you need to add a few drops of the liquid under your tongue and wait for it to take effect. Between the two, tinctures work faster than oils, and their effect is almost instantaneous.

An immediate effect is possible because CBD tinctures use alcohol as a base liquid. In contrast, oils like coconut and olive are the main substances used as a base for CBD oils. Of the two base liquids, alcohol gets absorbed faster into the bloodstream than oil, leading to the quick effect time of CBD tinctures.

However, because it uses alcohol as a carrier fluid, CBD tinctures are not effective when administered topically. They also do not have the same potency as CBD oil when added to food and drink.

Because of its oil content, you can use CBD oils topically and in food with minimal effect on the product's effectiveness.

2. Differences in Production

CBD tinctures get extracted using alcohol in a process called Ethanol Extraction. In this production method, cannabis plant matter gets introduced into an alcohol solution. This liquid is then heated under specific temperatures to draw out the ingredients for the CBD tincture.

On the other hand, CBD oils typically get made via the Supercritical CO2 Extraction method. Here CO2 is used to separate the pure CBD from the other compounds found in cannabis. Since this extraction method is extremely precise, CBD oils usually have a higher concentration than CBD tinctures.

In addition, because of its bitter taste, many brands add sweeteners and other additives to CBD tinctures to make them more marketable. These additives lower the potency of the product. For this reason, if you are looking for a product with high CBD concentration, you should opt for CBD oil rather than a tincture.

3. Differences in Potential Benefits

Both CBD oil and CBD tinctures can potentially treat ailments like mood disorders, inflammation, loss of appetite, and more. Your personal preferences influence the choice between these two products more than any qualities of the products themselves.

For example, if somebody prefers their CBD product to have a natural, organic flavor, you will opt for CBD oil. But if you like your product to taste great and not be too bitter, you'll choose the CBD tincture.

People looking for versatility in their product will doubtless choose CBD oil. However, CBD oils are more versatile and can be used topically, orally, or added to food and drink. Similarly, if you are looking for a fast-acting CBD product for purely oral intake, a CBD tincture is the thing for you.

4. Differences in Side Effects

Dosage and product quality plays an integral role in the side effects of CBD. Be it for CBD tinctures or oils; these factors are equally essential when considering the side effects of CBD usage.

Both tinctures and oils on the market can potentially be contaminated products. Since CBD usage is still largely unregulated, you may use a bad product, be it a tincture or oil.

To avoid unwanted symptoms like fatigue, diarrhea, and drowsiness, you must only make sure to buy quality products. Both CBD tinctures and oils should use locally sourced, USDA Certified Organic hemp. Your tincture and oil must also possess evidence of their transparency.

5. Legal Differences

All CBD products containing less than 0.3% THC are federally legal in the US. Both CBD oils and CBD tinctures fall beneath this category since their primary ingredient is CBD, containing minimal or no THC.

The THC content is more important in legal matters than the distinction between CBD oil and CBD tincture.

CBD Tincture vs. CBD Oil: Which to Choose?

As a product made from cannabis, CBD, be it in oil or tincture form, is more than capable of making its analgesic and anxiolytic properties accessible. The choice between CBD tincture and CBD oil depends entirely upon your preference. Both of these are highly effective and possess their own sets of merits.

CBD oils may be more versatile and CBD tinctures faster acting, but both have the same potential to provide benefits like pain relief and relaxation that cannabis is known for.
